One-shot Review: Druids of the Carnivorous Jungle

“Emerald sunlight filtered through the canopy of razor-sharp leaves, casting dappled shadows on the jungle floor where Anya, the firbolg druid, navigated cautiously. The humid air hung heavy with the stench of decay and exotic blooms, a constant reminder of the hunt-or-be-hunted reality of this monstrous ecosystem. Every rustle, every snap of a twig could herald a predator, its senses honed for the slightest misstep. Yet, Anya, attuned to the whispers of the Mother Tree, pressed on, her heart pounding a primal rhythm alongside the unseen thrum of life and death.”

Last weekend I played a one-shot called Druids of the Carnivorous Jungle, a one-shot by Rune Foundry! And it was a blast, it took little to no work from my side which made my week a lot easier and it worked very well with my players who don’t get the chance to play D&D too often. Here’s what I think about this one-shot in a bit more detail:

Dungeon Delving & Exploration:

Druids of the Carnivorous Jungle is set in the presence of a few teenage druids caught between a carnivorous jungle and an ever-expanding empire destroying their old forest villages. With the expert advice from a childhood friend, the players learn that in the jungle is a huge tree called the Mother Tree where they will be safe from any impeding dangers.

Little did they know that the jungle might have been a bit too much of a bargain. The jungle being seen as a dungeon is designed as a series of split paths where each decision leads to the end but with different experiences. This one-shot would work fantastically with newer players, supplying the DM with simple encounters in every section that each have multiple solutions that calls upon different game rules. I enjoyed the little hidden details that could only be seen depending on the decision the players made but I feel like there could have been some improvement in it, like maybe bringing an object from another room and placing it on a pedestal has a cave open up to a third directional choice.

Combat & Challenge:

It was the first time my players used the druid class and it was definitely an experience watching them make decision, I experienced the classic “waiting for the Paladin to come up with their action”, but it’s always a blessing watching new experiences at the table. Even though they were new to the class, the encounters were well balanced with simple actions, allowing the players enough space and time to figure out their next actions.

On the other hand some encounters definitely needed them to come up with solutions, the boss fight at the end for example had the payers defending the Mother Tree from deadly vines with life-stealing abilities leading to lots of creative solutions being created on the fly! Yet the dungeon was still short enough for any long or short rests.

Story & Narrative:

As mentioned before, the hook was definitely compelling enough, however instead of simply being told their villages were destroyed, immerse players in the chaos: acrid smoke stings their eyes as embers rain down from a firestorm that engulfs their home. Charred branches, once vibrant boughs, now block escape routes. The desperate pleas of village elders echo through the pandemonium – “Flee, young ones! Seek safety in whatever way possible! We’ll hold them back!” This heart-wrenching choice could defines the campaign. Do they defy the elders’ sacrifice and fight for a home already lost, or honor their wishes and plunge into the perilous embrace of the carnivorous jungle? The embers of their burning past illuminate the path before them – a path leading either to a desperate defense or a desperate escape.

Other than that, the story and setting tie into the gameplay extremely well, still I feel like the players could have had more decision leading to different consequences leading me to believe that to turn this into a truly memorable campaign you would still need to put in a certain mount of preparation as the DM and a certain amount of roleplaying as a player.
