One-Shot Spotlight: Behind the Scenes with a Player-Turned-GM

Last weekend, I traded my usual DM hat for a player’s cloak! One of my players, brimming with an idea inspired by the 2015 fantasy anime DanMachi (Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?), was eager to take the helm. With a session of Dungeons & Dragons 5e on the table, we dove into his twisted creation!

Ever wondered what it’s like to step out of the familiar role of Dungeon Master and into the thrill of being a player? Today, we get that chance! We’re diving into a conversation about their experiences, the downsides and upsides of being a DM, and where he got his inspiration from.

Inspiration with a Twist:

What inspired you to create your own one-shot campaign?

The spark for the one-shot actually came from two sources. Firstly, I’m a huge fan of the anime “Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” (DanMachi for short) and wanted to create a campaign experience inspired by that world. But I also really enjoy the classic fantasy elements of Dungeons & Dragons, so I blended those two together for a unique setting.

Can you walk us through the core concept of your one-shot?

The story took place in the bustling adventurer’s city of Orario. It had a serious tone with high stakes. The players took on the roles of adventurers who, unbeknownst to them, were unknowingly attracting a lot of attention from the city’s denizens. While they basked in the spotlight, a much more dangerous threat loomed on the horizon.

Anime Flair in Every Encounter:

How did you approach designing the challenges and encounters for the players?

Since the one-shot was inspired by DanMachi, I wanted to capture the anime’s spirit in the encounters. The players interacted with various characters from the show, complete with their signature personalities and dialogue. The encounters also featured custom actions and special abilities straight out of the anime, making it a truly immersive experience.

Learning Through Experience:

What were some of the biggest rewards and challenges of running your own one-shot?

One of the biggest challenges was improvisation. I hadn’t quite anticipated how the players would approach the story, and sometimes redirecting things towards a satisfying conclusion proved difficult. While it led to some unexpected turns, it also resulted in a less than ideal experience overall.

Do you have any advice for other players who might be considering creating their own one-shot campaigns?

Absolutely! If you’re passionate about a story concept, run with it! The ideas will come together as you develop it. Most importantly, be prepared for the unexpected. Players can take your story in surprising directions, so have some flexibility and a willingness to adapt on the fly.

From Player to Critic: My Take on the DanMachi One-Shot

Taking a break from the DM seat was a welcome change – thanks for running the game! This session showcased his growth as a GM. The themed music, fantastic roleplay opportunities, and his ability to adapt on the fly were all impressive, especially considering he has only run two games before.

The setting, encounters, and characters created a smooth foundation for the story. While the encounter balance could have been tweaked slightly (thanks to some last-minute cancellations!), it didn’t detract from the overall experience. In fact, it made me crave more! Exploring a mega-dungeon campaign as a player is definitely on my bucket list, and this one-shot has me itching to delve deeper into that world.
